Here is a thread to talk about the world of animation and cartoons.
moose and squirrel
dudley do right is better methinks
Formerly Known as MasterKlives
Personally I prefer Popeye.
The artist formerly known as Zorro.
was alleged to be a gateway drug to mass murder. So why are all those people I don't particularly care for still breathing my air?
Are used as training films in terrorist camps
...I also kinda dug the older version of daffy where he was clearly a manic. Then he just became a nasty fellah. The old version of Porky was funny as well. He would stutter a lot more, and he was fatter too.
I just like clean animation with no shading. Garfield, Tom and Jerry, the Simpsons, whatever. It's more pleasing to the eye then some of the lower budget stuff, albiet, if that's what they had to work with, well...
In describing the character's motivation, Chuck Jones cited Santayana's definition of a fanatic: "Someone who redoubles his efforts when he forgets his aim."
The way I see it, Jones must have plunked out the Roadrunner cartoons while thinking up his greater works. In the case of WHAT'S OPERA, DOC? he first finished a Roadrunner series entry (or the Wolf & the Sheepdog, same difference) in three weeks instead of the usual five, then used the saved fortnight to spend seven whole weeks making that classic. He got the whole crew to fake their work reports so the studio wouldn't know.
When I was a kid, my favorite WB cartoon character was Bugs; now that I'm a grownup, I prefer Daffy. My favorite Daffy cartoon would be DUCK AMUCK. ("Ain't I a stinker?")
here's a really trippy and somewhat obscure one from the 60s which is all about sound (I have no idea if this is on any of the Looney Tunes box sets or not - since it doesn't actually feature any of the Looney Tunes characters, it's hard to say...)
make the time to go to the Chuck Jones Museum.
He's da man!
which are vastly inferior to Looney Tunes
You can really tell the difference
but it's still Tom and Jerry
I should see if I can find some since Jones is an expert at that type of cartoon
The worse in cartoon animation!
makes Astro Boy look good
dear god! my eyes!
There truly has been hideous animation. Clutch Cargo barely, BARELY, qualifies as such. I saw that trainwreck; on The Higgins Boys and Gruber from the old Comedy Channel, if I remember correctly.
By taking the left turn at Albaquerque?
hee hee hee...
drawing of the Bellanca Airbus, though.
at a Cedar Point Crankycon. After she spent an hour or so in their company, I asked her (in private), "So, what do you think of my fellow Crankylanders?"
Her reply: "You know for adults, they certainly know a lot about cartoons."
The Mighty Hercules
Pokemon and all that other crap. I can't stand bad animation that's why I can't enjoy South Park like some people can.
just pretend it isn't animated. its more of a straight comedy than a cartoon anyways. With anime its more of an action show than a cartoon. John K, the creator of the late, great Ren and Stimpy, always says theres a difference between animation and cartoons. so if you see something like anime thats not done in a really not especially cartoony way, its not really a cartoon.
The thing to remember about anime is that its dubbed, and many anime dubs are in really crappy quality. A lot of american versions of anime that seem really stupid and childish area actually extremely emotional and powerful Japanese dramas.
Did the same people who made THE MIGHTY HERCULES also do ROCKET ROBIN HOOD?
Seeing as most of the posts are devoted to what isn't cared for, I thought I'd toss this out. These are some of my favorites past and present, either for the animation, the stories, the humor, or a combination thereof. (and in no particular order)
Bugs Bunny (early to mid)
Dexter's Laboratory (and The Justice Friends)
Daffy Duck (early)
Family Guy (early primarily)
Stocker and Hoop
Space Ghost Coast to Coast
Ren and Stimpy
Might have left a show or two out, but that looks like a good sample of what I do like. Flame away. :P
nice choices, heres my list
REN & STIMPY (seasons 1&2)
Dudley Do Right
The Powerpuff Girls
The Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy
The Marvelous Misadventures of Flapjack
(just getting into this one so I don't know much about it) El Tigre: The Adventures of Manny Rivera
Spongebob Squarepants (the movie and season 3 only, I don't get why this is such a big deal but its still pretty good)
Sponge Bob and Patrick are sitting around a roaring campfire and Patrick says "Hey, aren't we underwater?" suddenly the fire goes out. It's like the reality was fine til Patrick mentioned it. Similar to the old bit where the cartoon character runs off a cliff and he can keep on running as long as the doesn't look down. Only then does he fall.
I'd love to put Tom & Jerry on the top of my list lol. I dont often watch western animations, esp. modern ones, my liking would go for Japanese animations. I enjoyed all of Disney's productions and would love to watch them over again: The lion king, Beauty and the beast, White Snow and the seven dwarves...
you do mean snow white, right.
as for Japanese animation I adore One Piece
I dug that one when I was a kid, though no one I know remembers it. It was about a flying robot that was piloted by a kid and hidden in a volcano.
Both were cartoon serials:
"Belle and Sebastian" and "Mysterious Cities of Gold."
Interestingly, a pretty good indie band from the late 90's - early 00's named themselves Belle and Sebastian.
I used to watch "Transor-Z" AND "Belle and Sebastian", though both were on sunday mornings up where i'm at.
"Belle and Sebastian" was actually on TV Ontario.
"Transzor-Z" had a real Voltron vibe.
The cockpit.. what is it?
Thats a name I haven't heard in years. That really takes me back.
Tranzor Z Z Z!
...what...what were talking about again?
Seeing as so many of us are animation fans.
Anyway, the guys over at the "Cartoon (animation is serious fucking business!) Brew" blog are letting us ordinary people vote for our favorite Looney Tunes shorts for an upcoming book.
As far as not-good cartoons go, let's all play in the Cartoon Dump!
from the show: the marvelous misadventures of flapjack
Never seen that before
Makes Hanna-Barbera in the 60's look downright impressive.
Ummmmm, not that there's anything wrong with that.
A cape I can deal with, bur an effin' leotard?
And that theme song...
...Marching togetherIn all kinds of weather????
That songwriter must have had a damned short deadline.
Riding Fool wears leotards?
PPG's season 1 and 2 DVD's for Xmas.
Oh wait, there is no god.
And you're damn right there's not.
I thought only season 1 was out
How about this:
Powerpuff Girls season 1, and 2 DVD's
pressed the post button twice
and theres no delete option
Didn't oddball mention a really bad cartoon in his review of the Katz DVD. I know it was featured in Pulp Fiction, now what was that called?
...in fact, i would pay money to see him do it!
I'm glad there were no videos of the Family Guy singing and swinging to You Light Up My Life.
And so are you.
that's repetative and...
Maybe you've thought of this too.I don't think it's all that unreasonable to have somebody who actually knows what they're talking about introduce the animation categories at an award show. Why the Jonas Brothers? Why not Brad Bird? Damn you, Animation Age Ghetto!/ Taking a Flash class at MassArt this winter.// P.S. - Current generation of preteen girls, your Boy Band sucks. My original post, which didn't go through because this website still hates me, looked like this:
A thought I had during the Golden Globes. Maybe you've thought of this too.
