Barak Obama blames aid flotilla attacked by Israel

The Israeli Navy has boarded a group of ships in international waters carrying humanitarian aid to the Gaza strip.  Israel has been maintaining a blockade of Gaza for three years now.  The idea is to prevent Hamas from arming itself so that it can attack Israel.  Leftists and pro-Palestinians have claimed the blockade is inhumane and even illegal.  In the attack Israeli commandos killed at least 10 people.

From the Israeli newspaper Haaretz:

Barak voiced regret for the deaths, but called the flotilla a political provocation and said the sponsors of the flotilla were violent supporters of a terror organization.

Israel Defense Forces Chief of Staff Gabi Ashkenazi, meanwhile, said the soldiers were forced by violent activists to respond with live fire.

Deputy Foreign Minister Danny Ayalon said earlier Monday that the organizers of the Gaza aid flotilla have connections to international terrorist organizations such as Hamas and Al-Qaida, and called the aid convoy a violent and provocative attempt to break the blockade on Gaza.

PS:  Mr Obama should be required to provide proof that the people on those ships are terrorists or support terrorism.

That this "aid group" wasn't supplying weapons and cash to Hamas.

I'm afraid I must agree with you, Rajah.

The PR is better though. They've obviously got the right people stumping for them. It has now become obvious that the downward spiral continues, unabated. How sad for what was once a great country.

I remember in the mid-'80s

FearlessFreep's picture

When French agents blew up the Greenpeace ship RAINBOW WARRIOR and murdered a Greenpeace member, Jeane Kirkpatrick--the appalling semi-educated face of the Reagan administration--declared, "Whatever it was, it wasn't terrorism."

The Israelis in the late '60s kicked the shit out of

some Yank ship monitoring their communications during yet another mid-east "encounter" or war or terrorism or whatever the current terminolgy dictates. Nothing substantial happened over that, so I have no doubt that the Americans would ever whine and snivel and stamp their jackboots over a mere nine dead on some tramp steamer attempting to breach an Israeli blockade.

Even North Korea on a ship-sinking spree garners a non-response.

After all, there's no oil in the Gaza, and nothing but starving citizens in Korea and the Gaza.

Did anyone actually read the article? "Barak"...

Wulfgar's picture

...means "Ehud Barak", not "Barack Obama".

"Defense Minister Ehud Barak said earlier Monday that the organizers of the Gaza aid flotilla were to blame for the violent events aboard the ship.

In a press conference hours after the incident, Barak said that Israel was prepared to accept the consequences of its actions and would continue to protect its autonomy.

Re: Barack Obama --

"Obama voiced deep regret over the deadly raids, but expressed the importance of "learning all the facts and circumstances" surrounding the incident involving aid ships seeking access to the blockaded Gaza Strip.

He said he understood the prime minister's decision to return immediately to Israel to deal with today's events"

That's for liberal elitist socialists.  They should all be shot.

One out of four people is freakishly stupid. If three of your friends are normal, then it's you.

I'm sorry, but

we're all to busy posting and reading our own articles to be bothered perusing any others.

Congrats to Wulfgar

After I posted the original article I did notice my mistake but decided not to correct it.  I wanted to see if anyone would notice.

Maybe I am just used to reading the US press.  When someone here says Barak they mean that Obama guy.  The article I originally quoted from is from a liberal (if there is such a thing in Israel) newspaper.  When they say Barak they mean the defense minister of their country.

So how exactly has our Barak shown any sympathy to the pro-Palestinian blockade runners?  Obama tried to stop the UN from making even a strong statement against how Israel boarded a ship in international waters.  The solution to this mess would seem to be to have the UN inspect all boats docking in Gaza.  The blockade runners seem to agree with this.  What is wrong with this idea?

Haaretz proves to be a liberal newspaper after all

From the liberal Israeli newspaper Haaretz:Hamas 1, Netanyahu 0

The Israeli blockade of Gaza and all it entailed - the goods forbidden entry, the lies about how there was no humanitarian crisis there - was a form of collective punishment against an impoverished and oppressed population that cast a moral stain on Israeli democracy. Nor did this blockade achieve its promised goals. The Hamas government did not fall, Gaza residents did not rise up against it, and Gilad Shalit is still in captivity.

From everything I've seen, the Israelis should have waited until the boats came out of international waters, "pulled them over" and went aboard like cops instead of going all Delta Force on them.  And the "humanitarians" should have stood aside, let the Israelies see that all they were bringing was non-contraband items, and the Israelis should have then waved them through.

Unless, of course, the "humanitarians" were bringing some non-innocent cargo with them....

A lot of tears are shed for the unfortunate Gazans, and they are truly in a world of shee-yit, but not many of those tearful people seem to remember that the rulers that the Gazans tolerate - Hamas - have (to the best of my recollection) the stated purpose of eradicating the Israelis.  Pardon me, but I think that that gives the Israelis an incentive to keep Gaza from accumulating any material useful in fulfilling that goal.

Hey - Hamas - you guys lost, and the Israelis are there to stay.  Understand that, and life just might get better for the people whom you claim to care about.  For that matter, the right wing of Israel would do well to understand that the Palestinians are there to stay, too, and that life would get better for the people *they* claim to care about, too.

(And I eagerly await the first jerk who tries to pull out the Helen Thomas "Go Home" argument - especially if they're a European-descended Western Heminspherian.)
