Community Standards thread
So are there any for Crankyland 2.0? So far the F word has shown up in some posts. Not the letter, the actual word. Soooo does that mean some cussing is allowed now?
Also, are there some opinions or ideas that aren't allowed? So far two of my posts and one of my forum topics that were reviewed did not get posted. Frankly I'm not sure why, since they didn't have any dirty words. Just some semi-nasty opinions.
Is this now the age of a kinder gentler Mr. Cranky?

No official standards. And

No official standards.
And your posts might have been false positives on the spam filter. Sorry about that. Hopefully we've fixed most of that.

Is it a good idea to delete a post because it got 3 negatives?

I hate Spam with a passion. On the other hand I have no problem with people posting opinions I disagree with. Perhaps there would be some way to refuse posts from people who consistently gunk up the site with Spam?
Let's say someone accumulates 10-20 total negatives over a certain period of time. Then that person would have all of their posts reviewed before being posted. I don't know how possible this is from a technical point of view.
It just seems to me more important to deal with a pattern of bad behavior, instead of taking a chance of censoring someone just because a few users didn't like their opinion on something.

The dreaded "Spam Filter" strikes again

Jazzy, I submitted the same forum topic that was previously rejected and again it disappeared into the ether. Wouldn't it be better to have an actual person decide which posts should not be allowed?
What is a spam filter anyway?

I fear that the spam filter

I fear that the spam filter and the "buried by the community" things are coming close to being moderation, and since the cranky forums were previously unmoderated I don't know how the community will respond to this.
I have nothing against moderators since I've been on forums with them but I think older crankizens would object and it is kind of unlike the site to deny people the right to post what they want to
of course, we do want to prevent spam
hmmm, conundrum

Ethnic slurs were verboten in ye olde Crankylande

Maybe that made some sense. My twice deleted forum topic didn't have any of that. It seems that Cranky 2.0 zeros in on certain phrases that may not be obscene but are nevertheless not allowed. Frankly I'm more than a little confused.

Dan, can you tell us what was in your filtered post titles?
If anyone was offended by my post, I offer my sincere invitation to plant your lips firmly on my ass whilst making a smooching sound.

Nigger

will actually be the title of one of two blog posts I'm working on. I'd hate for that to be filtered.

Yeah, I AM serious about that

Maybe they've just installed an Annoy the Crap out of Dan filter?
I'll be checking back tomorrow to see if these posts are still here and to see if I'm still allowed to log on. Heh heh heh. He said "log."

My forum topic involved the new Obama administration...

... and what I wanted them to do first.
Some things on my list were very controversial. Others were obvious.

"older crankizens"?

Oh, you must be talking about Riding Fool and Coaster!
I miss the old naughty word filter. It made inflamatory posts come out funnier. Hard to sound mad when you are saying stuff like fried chicken, Melanie Griffith and choosen one.

Dan, maybe it was the stuff you were asking Hillary to do

I have a rough idea of what Coaster would like for her to do

Jazzy, please explain how the spam filter works

Stupid minds want to know.
Also it seems like when I use the preview function my post is less likely to be reviewed in the first place.

We use the akismet database,

We use the akismet database, which is a large repository of spam patterns and known spammers, and is updated everyday because most wordpress blogs contstantly feed it information.
If you post something that is close to a spam pattern (really really short with a link, links with keyword anchor texts, short in general, etc.) it will flag for review.
It also has a large database of known spammers IP's and email addresses and automatically flags those as well.
The good news is that every time I click on "not spam" on your posts, it learns. So eventually (hopefully) you will not be flagged.

OK Jazzy, thanks for the explanation on the spam filter

Now I'm tempted to find out if that data base has me down as a spam artist. Something I deplore more than you can possibly imagine.
