Will someone be kind enough to provide an answer to this question? I've often been told there's no such thing as a stupid question, but I've made it my life's mission to prove this old adage wrong.

Typically, it's an indicator of the popularity of a thread.

Assuming this board is like 99.9% of other internet boards, more posts will change the graphic, maybe to a different colour, eg red to indicate that it's popular. Some forums show flames flickering from the envelope.

Isn't the internets fun?
