It's not unusual

for a cargo hook to malfunction, for a pilot to inadvertantly hit the release button at the wrong time, or for some portion of the lanyard or netting to fail. The net might have been too light for the weight of the moose.
Although not a regular occurrence, it does happen from time to time in the world of helicopter operations.
The pilot probably feels worse than you do, especially if he screwed it up.

On the other hand,

there's nothing like punching the button for up to 6,000 rounds a minute on a nose gun that vibrates the hell out of the rivets attaching it.
Personally, I'd rather have the old-school way.
