In "real life" he was a rancher, rodeo rider, and blacksmith. He was a bodyguard for Howard Hughes in the 1950's. Brimley also served in the U.S. Marine Corps during the end of the Korean war.
He did something in Canada back in the '80s, but I can't find anything on it. Or, perhaps it's my imagination.

It wasn't Willie. It was the skinny Wilford Brimley, but damned if I can remember his name. He was a train robber in Canada (I think), had a sweetheart of a girlfriend, and blah blah blah.
Now if I could just find it...
