There is a single guy who plays Mr. Cranky and writes the articles, but Mr. Cranky the Character isn't real. I recall him mentioning in a 2001 statement that the purpose of Mr. Cranky, besides comedy and commentary, is to promote discussion and thought.
Since the timely death of the character Mr. Happy (whose articles were painful to read), the Mr. Cranky character has been prone to increasing dual personality disorders. Sometimes he'll believe in God, sometimes not. Sometimes he'll spout liberal garbage, sometimes he'll spout neocon garbage. Etc. Sarcasm is one of his favorite approaches, and mine. Fictitious characters don't have to have integrity or consistency, that's what usually makes them so entertaining.
