The point of 2001, like all of Stanley Kubrick's movies, is that human beings are filthy, stupid, wretched creatures who don't deserve to sharing the planet with such elevated creatures as the late Mr. Kubrick. Once can see this in his early work as a freelance photographer, where he predated Diane Arbus in his efforts to find the ugliest people and take the most unflattering photos of them possible (he was particularly nasty towards women--a tendency that he pursued with a vengance during his movie career--with the exception of SPARTACUS, a film produced by Kirk Douglas, can you remember a sympathetic woman is a Kubrick film?). I must say, I glad he became a film director, though. Otherwise, I suspect he would have become famous as the fellow they arrested after unearthing 15 missing hitchikers from under his garage . . . Of course, I could be wrong.
