I sat and watched this damn movie, and if the purpose for all of the silence was to allow you to analyze it, I think that Kubrick was asking waaaaay too much from the average human being.

The clip where Bowman is flying out in the pod to rescue Frank Poole goes on about 20 minutes longer than it should. Kubrick keeps cutting between Bowman in the pod, and Frank floating in the vacuum of space. I only needed two cuts to give me the basic gist of what was going on. There's a difference between art and crap. Just because something is by Stanley Kubrick does not automatically make it art. And when there is more silence than is absolutely necessary, I'm sorry. That's crap. Pure and simple.
