2001 was, to state the obvious, made in a much slower-paced era. Also, most of Kubrick's work demands that you pay attention. Close attention. 2001 reflects the optomism of the time, coupled with the first dawning doubts that technology is the answer to life, the universe and everything. If you want to be really,really, mindnumbingly, shatteringly, catastrophically bored, try watching some soviet-era Russian cinema, such as "Shadows of our Forgotten Ancestors." You will realised that the West only lightly skimmed the outer fringes of boredom compared the vast depths of hideous tedium plumbed by the Russians. Six people actually died of boredom in the cinema while I was watching this.
