Another way to look at 2001 is that David Bowman is not the main character in 2001...humanity is. In other words, the audience. All of us out there in the darkness, we were the "main character" in 2001.
The best analogy I can come up with at the moment is to say that 2001 is very similar to an old Disneyland Tomorrowland ride that no longer exists; "Adventure Thru Inner Space" was the ride that traveled slowly into the microscopic dimensions of a snowflake, until each person was as small as an atom. The experience was completely subjective.
Dave's journey was not his, it was ours...
