Nice, antique crystal wineglass falling and breaking. I guess it's just a signal to the viewer that something dramatic is about to happen. Or perhaps it's just to break the serenity, a micro-shock effect.
It could be something, but I guess the beauty of '2001' in general is that it doesn't provide you with clear-cut answers.
