Chances are, as Bowman grew older, he became re-fascinated with basic things he had ALWAYS been fascinated with, like, "Why does glass break when it falls?" or "Hey, look at that...GRAVITY! So that means I'm near solid ground somewhere..." (Remember...he went through Jupiter's atmosphere in the book, but Clarke wasn't quite sure WHAT he was writing about...!) Portal to another dimension....Short passage to some bearable, physics- defying part o' Jupiter...YOU decide!
