is that he premeditated and INVOKED the 7th sin (anger) from Brad Pitt's character and achieved his desired result, which was knowing that Brad would kill him. Had Brad refrained from shooting John Doe , it would have screwed up Doe's plans of punishment for the 7 deadly sins.
Kinda like Al Pacino (in the Devil's Advocate) playing with Keanu Reeves' "vanity", right up till the end.
