How to go about this, I'm not sure - I think the U.S. needs some sort of health care system, but it'll need to be run very efficiently in order not to be too costly to the taxpayers (then again, I've read the theory that the recent tax cuts are specifically designed to bankrupt Social Security, so I don't see this as a current priority).
Whst needs to happen is for someone to figure out how to trim all the fat off the various spending projects - there's probably plenty of crap the government spends money on that doesn't really help anybody or make things run better. Once that's gone, then we can move closer to a goal of eliminating deficit spending, having money for the best government programs (which I believe should be made more efficient without being eliminated) with enough left over for contigency plans (in case there's another terrorist attack or a war which we actually need to fight).
