Self-imposed, apparently.
You do hit on the fundamental flaw with the war "...as it was sold to the US public and to the world", however. If it had been marketed (and let's be honest here, that's what it was; spin-doctoring) along the lines of it being the international community's duty to rid the Iraqi people and by extension, the rest of the world, of a brutal dictator who liked nothing more than to slaughter his own citizens then surely many, many more people would've saluted when the US ran it up the flagpole. But no, the US government went with the fictional WMD angle, thereby consigning itself to the section headed "Great PR Stuff-ups Of The New Millenium" in all future spin-doctoring textbooks.
