I would ascribe that condemnation to Mulroney the Canadian PM who pushed through the Free Trade deal with the US despite best advice that the Americans would actually be a trustworthy trading partner. This from a Canadian who had previously been a stooge for the US mining industry. But then you might say,the majority of Canadians were morons for believing him. Actually, the majority of Canadians didn't believe him but the peculiar structure of our parliamentary system allowed him to push it through.
One of the sad consequences of our proximity to the US is the fact that more and more Canadians are persuaded that we are no different in our overall attitudes than our neighbours to the south. This accelerated post Trudeau and now has a bandwagon effect. Ideally, we should have retained the attitudes that inform true Northern countries, those that live comme l'hiver and realise the importance of interdependence rather than rugged individualism.
The US may continue to throw its weight around both militarily and economically but it may find that it may continue to alienate its friends as well as its perceived enemies should it continue in its presnet course.
And we have most of the world's fresh water.
