The article suggests a reporter asked about her playing abilities. It's not like Barnett just tossed that information out randomly while commenting on the rape charges. That said, I believe my response would have been, "I have no comment on that" if I thought she was awful, but that's just me. What most coaches probably would have said is "She was a hard worker and gave everything she had" or some such nonsense they usually dish out in such circumstances. I'm not sure what "context" has to do with anything, really...
