Being a screenplay writer, this one's right up my alley...
WHEN "Saving Private Ryan" wins Best Picture at the Oscars, it will undoubtedly lose the Best Original Screenplay award to the much more clever "Shakespeare in Love." Last year, Best Picture winner "Titanic" was not even NOMINATED for the Original Screenplay Award (THERE IS A GOD!) In 1996 BP Winner "The English Patient" curiously lost to "Sling Blade" in the Best Adapted Screenplay category (I say 'curiously' because I would hardly consider "Sling Blade" a traditional adaptation, but whatever.) This leads to several interesting questions.
1. It is my opinion that an adaptation is not judged or scrutinized as closely as an original screenplay, and (with the exception of the peculiar "Sling Blade" situation) almost every Best Picture winner that is an adaptation will automatically win Best Adapted Screenplay.
When was the last time (prior to "EP") that a Best Picture winner whose screenplay was an adaptation lost that award? (hint: just like the "Sling Blade"/"EP" situation, that year's BP winner was a little bit peculiar as well. The reason it and others prior to it lost makes sense, though.)
2. Prior to "Titanic," what was the last Best Picture winner that didn't get a screenplay nomination? (To show you how completely BAD "Titanic" was, since there are 10 total screenplay nominations, this is a VERY RARE THING)
3. Even though it's rare that a Best Picture winner won't get a screenplay nomination, as it turns out, it's actually somewhat rare that a Best Picture winner based on an original screenplay wins that award (aka "Saving Private Ryan" this year)! When was the last time a Best Picture winner based on an original screenplay won Best Original Screenplay and how many times has it happened in the last 20 years?

Once again, I suggest you post your answer before you look at the others. Not that I'll tag you for cheating... not that the "prize" is anything worth cheating for!
