My Fair Lady couldn't be nominated for Best Original Screenplay even if the Academy wanted it there. It was an adaption of Pygmalion. However, My Fair Lady committed one grievous error: it turned Pygmalion's reasonably happy ending (in where Eliza ends up with a man who loves her and Henry Higgins stays himself) into an unbelievably gratuitous happy ending (in which Henry falls in love with Eliza). This is completely out of character for both Henry and Eliza.
