I suppose you find Scorsese contrived, as well (too many shots of asphalt and alleyways). Or perhaps you feel that all films employing brightly lit interiors as settings are passe (damn, no more Kubrick films for me!). Gee, I really hated this movie, too. Why bother with films depicting the very real demons and everyday tragedies of lower class existence when the local megaplex is showing an Adam Sandler retrospective, and the local art house is showing the latest excercise in European art nouveau? Geez, I am swearing off all films that dare to wallow in so-called "realism." That's it, no more films showcasing Nick Nolte's self-dentistry.
