And it was Slothrop! Will wonders never cease...
Although, several local people have told me that they went to see "Memento" entirely because of my review, but other than that I didn't think anybody was paying attention!
Anyway, my favorite "Final Fantasy" comment from another critic: "My fantasy involved having the projector break or seeing the theater lights come back on." I guess being a projectionist as well, that tickled my fancy (though I didn't think the movie was anywhere near THAT bad). My discussion with Sloth and Chica actually caused me to drop my rating from the original 6.5 to a 5.5, especially when I considered there were numerous previous 6.5's I thought were much better. Most of the Rotten Tomatoes reviews say just about the same thing: Great visuals, vapid story. And if the critic is a predominantly visuals person like Drew, he passed it; if he's a predominatly story person like skilly, he failed it. Yet those two different persons wrote just about the same damn review (except for using positive modifiers vs. negative modifiers). Interesting how that works...
I must say I'm surprised by all the positive comments on both "Legally Blonde" and "The Score." Yet, once again, I'm reading the same thing in both the negative and positive reviews: not-so-good or original story, but the actors make it worth watching -- in some cases, whether they're at their best or not. I just can't go for that -- I might bloody well watch a movie just because a great actor is in it, but I'm not necessarily going to ENJOY a movie just because a great actor is in it. As a writer, I definitely lean toward the story side of this argument. Reese, Robert and Marlon are cool and all, but their movies this week were not all that cool, and it was mostly the scripts that did them in. (Although in Reese's case, it's most likely a sense-of-humor issue -- what can I say, I didn't find it very amusing. Some other critics did...)
