07/13/01: I done seen it: Final Fantasy review (spoilers)

Final Fantasy is a photorealistic CGI animated movie with a new age-y and rather silly plot. It involves a future Earth overrun by phantoms which suck the blue souls right out of people (one of the more interesting effects). It turns out the aliens are actually ghosts who are having really bad vibes since they don't know they are dead along with their civilization and planet. Or something like that.

The main character is a scientist Aki Ross who looks like she's barely old enough to be a high school student. Much of the story is derivative of Aliens, with one female soldier (voiced by Peri Gilpin) being almost identical to the woman soldier in Aliens. None of the animated characters are particularly involving, you are always aware that you are watching animation. Some of the character's voice actors have such well known voices (Donald Southerland in particular) that the dissonance between their characters and the voice are annoying.

There is a lot of the technobabble gobbledygook which I hated so much in Star Trek Voyager.

The movie is worth a look if you like animation of sci fi.

Playing with it is a preview for the upcoming Black Hawk Down which looks really interesting. Very nice cast (Tom Sizemore, Ewan McGregor) and a very authentic cast. But will it remain true to its source? The true story of a first class military and political fiasco? With American soldiers tortured to death and dragged thru the streets? Or will it have a sanitized happy ending leaving 'no man behind'?
