Cobain's death is by far the most "shocking" (as I understand the meaning of the word) thing in that list. The reason for that, I guess, comes down to personal animosity and antipathy towards many of the other listees and the context in which I learnt of his death.
But I'm not sure how "shocking" Jim Morrison/Rick James/Rolling Stones/any rock star getting busted for drugs is; either then or now. And surely Wacko Jacko getting married to Lisa Marie is waaaaaaaay more shocking than him being accused of paedophilia.
Also thought that the deaths at the Roskilde Festival should've been up there with Woodstock 99.
