Right now I am listening to "Alexander the Great and His Time" by Agnes Savill on tape. Her take on him was that he was a military genius who was way ahead of his time. She thinks he was an inovator in government, science, religion and just about everything else.
It was perfectly logical for him to attack the Persian empire that was threatening the Macedonians and the Greeks. But after Darius - the leader of the Persian empire was killed - even she can't seem to come up with a logical reason for Alexander to have invaded India. It was right about at this point that his problems started with his army.
Is it possible he only did it out of curiosity to find the great ocean that was rumored to be on the east coast of India? It makes no sense that he did it for money since he always gave away almost all of the plunder of his campaigns.
