06/06/98: And yet another review...

CAPSULE REVIEW: I liked it! Not as good as the first 2, better than the 3rd, and nowhere near as bad as all the dumb ass reviews have said it is. It is not deep in horror as the previous, but deals with more of the sci-fi aspects.

THE RATINGS:
Horror: 4 out of 10

Cool sci-fi concepts: 8 out of 10

FX: 7 out of 10

Characters: 7 out of 10

Action: 7 out of 10

Overall: 8 out of 10

...

FOR ALL THOSE RELIGIOUS NUTS OBSESSED WITH ORIGINALITY: Well, it's a sequel, so obviously the story is not original. However, it is not a remake of any the previous, except for the ending, which is a slight variation of the first 2. As the previous films, this has an android and a traitor character, as well as other trademarks of the alien series. The feel of the film may remind you of "City of the Lost Children" with aliens stuck in it...

THE REVIEW (a.k.a. wake up!): There are several things that attract me to this film. One of them is the cool characters that were implemented. Heck, even Ripley looks cooler. Another is that there are no good characters. Everybody is a bad guy on some term, some with a few "good" characteristics in them, others without. Also, the setup for the alien attack takes its time, showing a cool futuristic set. This film is set at least 400 years from the present time, so any concept can be applied, even the way the rebuilt Ripley and the aliens, or the way the army behaves, or the way the scientists behave. I think this setup was not a bad idea also because heck, we all know that the aliens are going to attack, and we know that they are there, so it would have been pointless for the film to try to convince us for a while that they are not and "surprise" us.

When we the aliens start attacking, and there is the battle/escape, it is pure entertainment. Well, a few things against genetics and corporations are said, but that is as deep as it goes. But, come on, do you go to watch the alien movies for how deep they are? I mean, how many of you out there figured out that "Aliens" was about the Vietnam war the first time you watched it, or the second, or the ninth? I am not saying that these films have to be beach party slashers, I'm just saying that, heck, you might find "deep" themes in here later on, so stop whining about "deepness", "shallowness", blah, blah, blah...

I don't know if there is anything left to review. The acting? Decent. Direction? Good. My review? My review sucks and has to improve a lot, writing more clearly over the same themes.

COMPARISON:
Alien: 10 out of 10

Aliens: 10 out of 10

Alien3: 7 out of 10

I SAY: Watch this film and make your own conclusions...
