05/20/1999: A more sensible opinion...

Mr Cranky leaves himself no room to move by giving this film the dynamite. Sure, Alien Ressurection is not the best of the series, but it certainly isn't the worst. That title, of course, belongs solely to Alien 3, which was reviewed by one critic as being an insult and a lousy way to end the series. What it may surprise you to know is that Alien Resurrection is more consistent with the original script for Alien 3 written by Gibson, who was pretty miffed when they jettisoned his script. That decision now ranks as the second worst decision in the history of filmmaking, surpassed only by that of 20th Century Fox to just give Lucas all the rights to Star Wars shortly before Episode IV was released, in exchange for having to pay less for his directing. In Gibson's script for Alien 3, Ripley dies in the first five minutes, with Hicks, Newt, and Bishop surviving. Like in Alien Ressurection, a company begins experimenting with the alien DNA and finds that it merges with any species the aliens can breed through. The strange thing that results from this is that HR Giger's design for the alien is more closely followed, including the breeding method of genetic assimilation (similar to what we saw with the "nest" in Aliens). From what I remember of Gibson's Alien 3 script, Alien 3 could have made Aliens look like Attack Of The Killer Tomatoes by comparison. Such a pity that studio executives don't think about the longer-term when they make decisions.
