07/26/01: Film on video and film criticism...

Posted By: Scorsese_fan

Just a thought. A lot of people come on here and trash films they have seen on video. A lot of these videos are not letterbox, and their aspect ratio is not what the director intended. Thus, when a friend of mine saw "Days of Heaven" on non-letterbox video, he was underwhelmed. Another friend, upon seeing "Nashville" on vieo, had similar negative remarks. Now, these two films are the worst type to see on video. "Days" is highly visual, and most of what Malick is doing is based on notions of the duality of open space. In "Nashville" Altman has a lot of things going on in the background (and in the periphery). On the non-letterbox video version, there are idiotic 'cut and pans' to these backgrounds, ruining the effect. Still, even for films where the transfer does less of a disservice, the change in the way the film is presented can change the whole way the viewer experiences the film. Just a thought as a lot of people on here trash a film they see on video for the first time. "Traffic" immediately comes to mind as a film that has gotten panned a lot more as people have seen it on video. Admittedly a lot of the concerns have to do with other aspects, but, for me, the way Soderbergh used space and different film grades was one of the best and most impactful aspects of the film.
