Your point re video transfer is well made and I agree completely.
Regarding 'Traffic', I saw it at a theatre (in Wisconsin, no less). I agree about the spatial aspects of the film, but to this day I feel that the use of the blue and yellow filters (or different film grades - I'm no expert on film technology) to denote the US v Mexico was unnecessary, insulting to the audience and ultimately annoying. Surely the landscape itself is more than sufficient to denote the differences between the US and Mexico.
I also don't appreciate having a films 'message' rammed down my throat, but that's separate issue.
