12/02/07: Tarkin was also the only Imperial officer who could stand up to Vader

e.g. when Vader is aboard the Death Star, in a conference room filled with Imperial officers.

One of the Imperial officers insults Vader about his pathetic mystical powers (i.e. The Force) and Vader starts to Force-choke the officer.

It was Tarkin who said "Vader! Stop it!" and Vader did stop. Tarkin was the only Imperial officer who could limit Vader's excesses. After Tarkin died when the Death Star was destroyed, Vader killed Imperial officers willy-nilly and no one could dare order him to stop like Tarkin did.
