I'm way older than you two, but check this out... where I grew up in Southern California, from grades 1 - 12, there was a grand total of *one* black kid for a grand total of *one* year at any of the schools I went to... and he was a foreign exchange student from one of those African countries where the people are blacker than black; coal black... I never dealt w/ him, as he was in a different grade. It seemed that the school kinda had the 'goodie goodie' social club types make sure things went well for him... but it's weird, looking back, that even though I lived in a middle/lower middle class neighborhood it was totally white.
And the only Mexicans we dealt with were in my Junior and Senior years, when the school district dumped a bunch of "Juvies" on us from other schools... these fucking losers would get their rocks of by beating the *fuck* out of the Special Ed kids... it sucked... I hated high school.
