04/26/01: And another example of the free market at work

Posted By: convenor

A few years ago, Mexico had 60 (count 'em!) domestic sugar companies. Well, the United States, under pressure from those champions of the Free Market, Coca-Cola and Pepsico, decided to ban sugar imports. Mexico's sugar exports dried up because of the ban, and thanks to subsidies wangled from the U.S. government, high fructose corn syrup manufacturers (guess who?) flooded the Mexican market, undercutting the domestic sugar prices and forcing the Mexican sugar companies into bankruptcy or receivership.

When Mexico's sugar manufacturing collapsed, a couple of U.S. soft drink companies (you don't mean?) moved in, bought up the sugar companies, and began aggressively marketing their product all over the country. Mexico no longer has even one domestic sugar company.

The Free Market: Working best for those with the most money! Thanks to free market "innovations" forced on Mexico under NAFTA, more than 70% of Mexico's citizens now live below the poverty line. Bring on FTAA!!
