04/19/1999: Historical accuracy

I haven't seen Anastasia, but from all I've heard about it, I hate this movie. Aside from the most obvious inaccuracy (Anastasia surviving the execution of the imperial family, which she didn't), I am concerned about what I've heard about the role of Rasputin. In real life, Rasputin was Nicholas and Alexandra's closest adviser; his influence over the Romanovs even reached the point where, during World War I, he was hiring and firing government ministers. This influence was gained by his mysterious ability to stop the bleeding of the Romanov's hemophiliac son Alexei. He was hated because of his power and was murdered by a group of noblemen in December 1916. He was trusted by the Romanovs until the end and never betrayed them, nor they he. In the movie, Rasputin (or presumably his ghost)is portrayed as hating the Romanovs and as trying to exact revenge on them. This is not only a total distortion of history, but a disservice to those who see this movie and do not know the historical facts. Both adults and children who do not know the facts might see this movie and might take the inaccuracies as truth. As Mr. Cranky says, American kids are undereducated enough. And the excuses "it's a kid's movie" or "it's just a cartoon" don't cut any ice either.
