Heard this on the radio this morning...
Back in the early sixties (?) before it was actually called the Super Bowl, the most important game of the professional football season was simply called the championship. Someone on some NFL board was watching his daughter play with a super ball (remember those small hard rubber balls that would bounce sky-high?) and he thought "super ball -- super bowl." When he presented his idea to co-workers, they started using the name which stuck for three years when it became the official name.
