01/27/00: Here they are...MY OFFICIAL OSCAR NOMINATION PREDICTIONS.

For the "big six" categories:

Best Picture: "American Beauty," "Being John Malkovich," "The Hurricane," "The Insider," "The Talented Mr. Ripley"

Best Actor: Jim Carrey, "Man on the Moon"; Russell Crowe, "The Insider"; Matt Damon, "The Talented Mr. Ripley"; Kevin Spacey, "American Beauty"; Denzel Washington, "The Hurricane"

Best Actress: Annette Bening, "American Beauty"; Janet McTeer, "Tumbleweeds"; Julianne Moore, "The End of the Affair"; Meryl Streep, "Music of the Heart"; Hilary Swank, "Boys Don't Cry" (I'm giving Meryl Streep the dark-horse slot here over someone like Sigourney Weaver based on the theory that if Streep has even a remote chance at a nomination, she'll get it. But I won't be shocked if she doesn't.)

Best Supporting Actor: Tom Cruise, "Magnolia"; Michael Clarke Duncan, "The Green Mile"; Jude Law, "The Talented Mr. Ripley"; Haley Joel Osment, "The Sixth Sense"; Christopher Plummer, "The Insider" (I had to cut John Malkovich from the final five here.)

Best Supporting Actress: Angelina Jolie, "Girl, Interrupted"; Catherine Keener, "Being John Malkovich"; Julianne Moore, "Magnolia"; Samantha Morton, "Sweet and Lowdown"; Chloe Sevigny, "Boys Don't Cry" (I realize that the spot I gave to Moore is up for grabs - she just strikes me as a little more likely to get it than Cameron Diaz or Mena Suvari or whoever. Again, I won't be surprised if she's not nominated.)

Best Director: Norman Jewison, "The Hurricane"; Spike Jonze, "Being John Malkovich"; Michael Mann, "The Insider"; Sam Mendes, "American Beauty"; Anthony Minghella, "The Talented Mr. Ripley" (I know the five directors rarely exactly match the five best-picture nominees, but a nomination for Frank Darabont or M. Night Shyamalan seems less likely than one for any of these five contenders.)
