1859 was the year in which THE ORIGIN OF SPECIES by Charles Darwin appeared and made the traditional cosmology of the West obsolete, much to the discomfort of the rich and powerful who saw themselves as favorites of the deity. This movie shows the dawn of that new era and how validation and empiricism became the new criterion for truth. The Alabasters were shown as a relict fauna. The practice of incest in the Alabaster Family was creepily compared to a termite colony. Subtle commentaries were made about the then ongoing Civil War (1861-1865) in the USA, and the observed warfare of ants was an obvious commentary on it. This movie is packed with food for thought.
