You can't jam this much story into a feature length movie and not expect to lose something in the process.
Take "Dune," for example (and I'm not criticizing the story as such, so don't flame me as a Dune-hater): we have a complex conspiracy, a large cast of characters, a story involving loads of folklore, a messianic hero and, as backdrop, four distinct planets. All of these elements were jammed into a mere 2 hours and 20 minutes. Hence there wasn't time for anything except the briefest expositions on the basic plot-line.
The Star Wars Trilogy, at least, did it right, in spite of my criticisms of it elsewhere: Lucas KNEW that he couldn't possibly put EVERYTHING into one film.
Oh, well- some folks learn, others just grope blindly.
