One of the best book-to-movie conversions I ever saw was 'Stand By Me', which is based on a novella by Stephen King called 'The Body'. The movie has at least 90% of the original dialogue and follows it faithfully. About the only thing I noticed missing in the movie was one of the short stories by the narrator - the one about the pie eating contest WAS in the movie, and the one omitted wouldn't have made sense anyway as it was written after the time of the movie.
