10/07/1998: Thoughts on wrestling...

Posted By: Beast

Yesterday,I found the WWF's latest tape,ON THE EDGE,at the library. It's great. They have a whole bunch of old stuff, too, from the '80s.Well,I watched it.And I was totally disgusted and embarrassed."WWF...ATTITUDE!" it says.Yeah,it's full of 5th-grade tough-guy ATTITUDE now. They SWEAR,too!(Gosh,what...ATTITUDE!)It's almost funny, but basically pathetic,to hear Vader yell,"I'm just a big fat piece of SHIT!" The few good parts were a weird running joke among the announcers involving country tunes. ("Ever heard 'I'd Rather Have A Bottle In Front Of Me Than A Frontal Lobotomy'?") There's also a 3rd-degree black belt named Steve Blackman who could be dangerous. Then there was a horrifying yet hilarious moment when Owen Hart tried to put a cervical collar on a guy with a neck injury. He puts it on the wrong way, then has to take it off and put it on correctly. Then there was The Undertaker, one of the coolest wrestlers EVER,who's still in the WWF,along with Paul Bearer, but they're enemies now.The climactic match-Steve Austin wrestling some jerk named Dude Love-was good, because they've got this insane story arc going-yes,wrestling is FAKE,kids-involving Vince McMahon, who gets to show off his-considerable-acting ability.I myself prefer the old WWF,much of which is available on tape.
