No, it's not because gender-bending is anathema to Hollywood. It's because Ranma is inherently dumb, and would have been dead here in America (like it is in Japan) except the average mental age of an American anime fan is 11 or 12.
Of all the anime out there... They could have chose any of the Miyazaki movies. They could take high drama like Galaxy Express 999. They could watch an epic like Macross. They could even choose classic cyberpunk like ADPolice. But what do people choose?
Ranma, aka "same joke for 124 episodes - we're easily amused." Sailor Moon, aka "we like 14 year olds in short skirts." Or horror of horrors, Dragon Ball, in which the main plot revolves around little kids with huge hair beating the shit out of each other for 22 minutes, every single episode for 5 seasons running.
Fanboys... they make me pro-nuclear.
