The problem sometimes is that people see the world the way they want it to be rather than the way it is.
Canada and Mexico wouldn't last five minutes if the United States were incapicitated. Sorry if I'm stepping on your pride, smell the coffee. They are incapable of defending themselves against Iraq, China, Russia.(Do you think the bear has lost it's bite?) They continue only under the umbrella of the Monroe Doctrine as do all the countries of this hemisphere.
There was a My Lai massacre once a week during my two tours in 'Nam. It's just that this particular one wasn't covered up. Does anyone know what a "double veteran" is? That's when you rape a woman and then kill her. I knew people that did that for a hobby. If extreme acts of agression and cruelty were portrayed as normal and commonplace, they would lose their shock value and you couldn't make movies about them.
If you think that such events could not go unnoticed, consider that 45,000 children on this planet die from starvation or malnutrition DAILY and there's no big outcry. So who's going to notice when a tiny village is burned and the occupants are labeled enemy and done away with?
I'll tell you again, though I know it won't take - there are many who hate us for our success. I believe it was Kennedy who said, "The price of peace is eternal vigilance."
Some people want others to stand their watch.
The United States saved the asses of China, Philippines, Britain, Poland, France (and all of Europe), and by participation, extension, and distraction, Russia. As well as Singapore, and all of Malaysia and Indonesia, and Indochina (French pussies couldn't do it), and who knows who else the Krauts and Japs would have swallowed. (that's right, focus on my political incorrectness rather than the accuracy of my opinions).
Fact is, we saved the world, and for risking our lives, we're hated. No good deed ever goes unpunished.
I guess the French should hate us, though. Even though they were cowards, would not fight for themselves, and collaborated with the Nazis, we saved them anyway. But then our soldiers gave their women stockings, lipstick, beer, C-rats, cigarettes, and fucked them. Unforgiveable.
