the book that Willard sees is Kurtz's report to the command. It was Kurtz that wrote "Exterminate the brutes" on the pages. In Heart of Darkness, Mr. Kurtz does about the same thing, and Marlow (same character as Willard) sees it. What it means is that Kurtz was this model soldier, but when he ventures into Vietnam, he goes crazy. He attempts to fool himself and his command by writing a brilliant report on his mission, but in the end his internal evilness gets a hold of him, and he scribbles down what he really thinks. The ending, where Willard just leaves is very important because it shows that Willard did not fall into the same evilness that Kurtz did--instead of succumbing to the worship of the natives, he takes Lance and whatever sanity he has left and gets the hell o
