The idea for this movie came from the J. Conrad's book, Heart of Darkness. It was printed back in the 50's I believe, it may have been sooner than that. I saw this movie at the theater when it first came out. 2 years later I was in the Army. Throughout my military career whenever this movie was mentioned around a vietnam vet they would always get defensive and say "That was a chickenshit movie about the Nam, it wasn't that way." I used to think "You idiot, they movie just Nam as a back drop."
