"Heart of Darkness" was written by Joseph Conrad sometime during the realist period. This is aproxiametly between the end of the American Civil War and the start of World War I. Conrad's book is based not in the jungles of Nam, but in the unexplored regions of Africa. I am under the belief that if Copella wanted to recreate the emotions and ideas expressed in Conrad's book without placing the movie in an almost ancient time period, he had to use a war as a back drop. In order to get the same jungle mystique as Conrad, Copella would also have to place his movie in a jungle. I must really recomend reading "Heart of Darkness" for any fan of "Apocalypse Now" who isn't just a war movie buff. The book is far better than the movie
