The Apple Dumpling Gang Movie Review | Mr. Cranky

The Apple Dumpling Gang

Bomb Rating:

To me, watching this movie is the equivalent of mainlining Prozac: a feeling so wonderful that you just want to run out into the street in your Winnie-the-Pooh pajamas and scream to the world: "Life is so Beautiful! Everybody be happy!"

To me, watching this movie is the equivalent of mainlining Prozac: a feeling so wonderful that you just want to run out into the street in your Winnie-the-Pooh pajamas and scream to the world: "Life is so Beautiful! Everybody be happy!" But remember: Don't do drugs. Drugs are bad. Life is what's good!

Tim Conway and Don Knotts are the two cutest bandits ever. They play Amos Tucker and Theodore Ogelvie and even though they're not the main characters they steal the show with their family-style humor and childish antics.

The story follows Mr. Russell Donovan (Bill Bixby) as he cares for three kids in the Old West (instead of shipping them off to some orphanage). He falls in love with them and also falls in love with Dusty (Susan Clark), the tomboyish woman who loves those kids just as much as he does. When Mr. Donovan finally realizes how much he loves Dusty, it's like the sun coming up on the world for the first time. I think everybody would agree that scenes like this make us all recall our own first loves and smile. Also, because Bill Bixby plays Mr. Donovan, I was reminded of "The Incredible Hulk" and my childhood and how great it is to be young, just like Celia (Stacy Manning), the cute girl in this movie who steals the show, even from Tim Conway and Don Knotts.

Grab some dessert and sit down for a heaping helping of "The Apple Dumpling Gang"!

  • I wish it weren't so, but the image that resonated in my brain after seeing "Meet Joe Black" was of director Martin Brest, bent over naked in a theater chair trying desperately to reach his own weenie
