07/15/1999: If the film flops, they can't blame the source material!

J.R.R. Tolkien wrote a rip-snorting series. To my shame, I have not finished reading the series, but once you start reading a chapter of his, ANY CHAPTER, it's very difficult to put down the book. If the screenplay sticks closely to the best part of Tolkien's prose, if the actors can play hobbits, dwarfs, elves, and wizards with straight faces, and most important of all, if there is a talented director with vision determined to put that vision on the screen, then "The Fellowship of the Ring" will be a success, along with the other two films. If they try to film all three books in one film, the project is doomed to failure.

With the budget they have in mind, they probably couldn't afford him, but Sir Anthony Hopkins would be perfect as Gandalf. Since they can't, they might be better off hiring Bernard Hill--he has experience working with an egomaniacal director with a gargantuan budget. ;-)
