The Apartment. He didn't win any awards for that movie, but he should have.
The most poignant moment in "The Apartment" is when Bud Baxter (Lemmon) picks up Fran Kubelik's make-up compact, and realizes it's the same compact he returned to his boss, after his boss had finished romancing his girlfriend in Baxter's apartment. Bud Baxter, in a half-hearted voice, tells Kubelik that the compact's mirror is broken. Fran responds, "I like it that way. It makes me look how I feel".
A wonderful movie with a wonderful open ending, and a wonderful score.
