07/04/01: I Love My Life.

Even though I don't need to work, I sometimes apply for jobs. A few years ago I applied for a job with NASA. The position called for high mathematical skills and a background in electrical engineering (I just barely finished high school). I lied on the application, using the life of Einstein and Niles Bohr for inspiration.

The job interview was held at Cape Canaveral, an easy drive from the small Florida town I live in. When I arrived at the Cape, I was dressed in my usual garb: deck shoes, pocket T-shirt, and cut-off shorts. I had gotten good and drunk the night before, so I was looking my worst.

I could tell by the look on the personel manager's face that he had excluded me from consideration at first sight. But, to his credit, he did go through with the interview. I had no idea what the answers to the questions he was asking me were. Mostly, I just nodded my head and said...YES! Then I'd smile and ask if the photos on his desk were real, or did they come with the frame.

Two weeks ago I applied for another job, one with "Gourmet Foods," a subsidiary of "The Tree Of Life Corporation," which was started by a couple of hippies back in the early 70s. I applied for a managment position, and when I got the call for an interview, I showed up with stubble beard, long hair, grungy blue jeans, and a pocket T-shirt with holes in the armpits.

The little guy sitting behind the personel manager's desk didn't look like a hippie. He was all clean shaven and wearing a nice suit. He was one of those people who had traded his soul for a soft position, and never looked back. The type of person that the old hippies, who founded The Tree Of Life, once railed against. Now the hippies were hiring the people they once picketed. Just like Ben and Jerry.

I didn't have the heart to go through with the interview. I just told the guy that I didn't want to work for people that had sold out, and violated their own principles.

Money isn't everything, unless you want to buy a politician.
