09/06/1998: Why the Avengers was...that way

Posted By: Lolita

I am very picky. I usually have something snotty to say about everything. But I liked the Avengers. Here's why: 1) Critics actually took the film seriously. Like the show, the movie was silly. I made fun of James Bond and stuffy British sophistication. It was no more serious a film than Austin Powers. Get over it. 2) The dialogue was hilariously trite. Do you actually think that any self-respecting screenwrite would seriously put "rain or shine, it's all mine" in a movie without intedning to make us laugh at it and feel smarter than we actually are? 3) Do you think that Sean Connery gives a shit about how stupid his movie roles are now? He was James Bond, for Christ's sake. He was Robin hood, he was Highlander, he was (and still is in many cases) in sexual fantasies nationwide. I'm sure he had a great time making fun of all the Bond movies he made, playing the dumbest villain ever, IN A KILT. Let's not criticize Connery's choices of roles. Let's celibrate his ability to laugh at himself an make millions at the same time. 4) Having seen hundreds and hundreds of films, I can tell you, the editing was bad, the dialogue was bad, and the director obviously had somewehere else to be. I didn't bother me, because it was still fun to watch. I know it was poorly made, but who the hell cares? It gives audiences everywhere a chance to feel superior, and everyone wats that. 5) I'm clean. I don't take drugs, with the exception of an occasionaly cup of joe. Getting to see the Avengers is like an hour and 45 minutes on acid. I mean, escher stairways, robotic bees, women called father, men called mother, mute clones, London with nice weather, the whole thing is one long trip.
