An expensive mistake, no doubt. But sitting back in my Phantom Casting Director's chair I see (too late) the solution:
John Steed : Timothy Dalton - he has the right sardonic, English understatement and a hint of violence.
Emma Peel : Catherine Zeta-Jones, the right looks and accent, and she was cheaper when the film was made.
Guess we're forced to leave Connery in place even thosugh he's a terrible ham, his name sells it in the US.
